SKYLINE DRIVE-IN MOVIES

Take a trip back in time to the wonderful world of the 50s. Skyline Drive-In Cinema at Blacktown is the perfect place for a relaxing, laid back date, or even a cute trip out with the girls! Personally, I love the drive-in movies and would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Sitting in your car, seat reclined, under a blanket and star watching in summer is what it’s all about. The Greater Union twin Drive-in cinema is a relic of the city’s history and is one of the last remaining in the entire state. This place is a blast from the past and that is what makes it so special. The classic American style diner is filled with old memorabilia and tunes of ‘Grease’, Elvis and other well known artists.

Located in Sydney’s West, this classic movie theatre, has staff dressed in old school candy striped uniforms in a ‘Happy Days’ setting. Enjoy a true 1950s dining experience with delicious burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and of course fries. The atmosphere of the diner is truly enjoyable, you almost feel like you are in a scene from ‘Grease’. The Drive-in movies is definitely a good mix up from the standard movie and dinner date. This old-school cinema offers a wide variety of new blockbuster films, as well as having special showings of classic movies such as, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, ‘The Breakfast Club’ and many more.

For those who are looking for something new and fun to experience, the Skyline Drive-in at Blacktown is perfect! For those of you who have access to a bigger car or ute, I would definitely suggest taking it as laying in the back all comfy watching a movie is nothing short of a perfect night! An added bonus to this nostalgic experience is the affordable cost of tickets, as they are a lot cheaper than regular cinemas. Top tip: arrive at the cinema early so you can snatch the best seat. This old-school drive-in with a rock n roll themed diner is the perfect way to spend the evening in the comfort of your own car!

DAY TRIPS DOWN THE COAST

If you’re someone who love adventures, exploring and nature then these next places are perfect for you! All you need for a perfect road trip down the coast is yourself, that special someone and obviously a car. Our first stop is Sublime Point Lookout which is at the heart of the Illawarra area, with breathtaking views.

Well worth the stunning scenery, it is one of Wollongong’s most iconic walks. Roughly only 20 minutes from the Sutherland Shire, Sublime Point Lookout is a great, quick trip down the coast, perfect during the day or at sunset during the summer. It is easily accessible by car with a minutes walk to the primary lookout or if you are the more adventurous type, there are numerous walking trails.

Take an extra 15 minutes drive down the coast and you will arrive at Bulli! If you love a good scenic view, then I would definitely suggest driving along Sea Cliff Bridge.

Bulli is home to many cute home-style cafes all within a few minutes from the beach. One of my favourites in particular, is ‘Ruby’s Cafe’ located on Bulli beach. If you are in search for a weekend getaway, this spot is perfect as there is a caravan park right next to the cafe. Even better, every second Sunday Bulli holds the Foragers Market! Bulli is a great little suburb where everyone is friendly, and the little cafes make casual lunches on sunny days even better. You’re only 30 minutes from home and yet you feel like you are on holiday.

Other nice places close to this area include Stanwell Tops which, is on the Northern tip of Wollongong and is popular for hang-gliding and paragliding. Enjoy these sights fro Bald Hill lookout with the best views above the cliffs and ocean.

For all you animal lovers out there, Symbio Wildlife Park is only a short 3 minute drive away from the Tops, conveniently positioned on the top of the Illawarra escarpment with stunning views of the pacific ocean. Symbio is home to all of your favourite Australian animals as well as a wide variety of exotic animals i.e. ring-tailed lemurs, meerkats (how cute!), cheetahs and many more.

What a better way to spend the day than getting up close and personal with some cute fury friends! Symbio is highly interactive as visitors can roll around the grass while they pat and feed Kangaroos. If this is something you would love, then you will be happy to know Symbio offers a behind the experience, offering the ultimate animal experience! Symbio is open 9am-5:30pm everyday which, makes it perfect for a full day of animal fun!

THE GROUNDS OF ALEXANDRIA

The Grounds of Alexandria is the perfect place for a girls day out! Opened in 2012, The Grounds is a restaurant and bar, cafe, florist, market, bakery, garden and so much more jam packed into a wholesome, homestyle location. Visiting The Grounds of Alexandria - which, even in the 1920s was an industrial precinct - feels like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole into a picturesque garden. The acre of land holds a variety of farm animals, an abundance of sweets and treats and so much to see and do.

Everywhere you look there is a hint of historical touch embedded in too, whether it’s vintage pick-up trucks, a red phone booth or old lamps. Even the horse stable bathrooms are worth a look. What is also nice to notice is their attention to sustainability through the use of recycled jars for pot plants and flower beds.

What’s more is the selection of food, giving you the choice to dine in at their café and restaurant or dining outside listening to the animals and water fountain while indulging in ‘The Potting Shed’s’ scrumptious menu. ‘The Potting Shed’ is a lively area to meet, eat, drink and relax, with locally harvest produce and an abundance of greenery!

Immersed throughout the grounds there is a plentiful spread of colourful carts selling a variety of sweet treats, fresh lemonade and the most delicious Nutella filled donuts. Navigating The Grounds can be quite tricky, so I suggest arriving mid to late morning as there will still be available parking on the premise. Parking surrounding the area can be a bit of a hassle. Luckily enough it is only a 10 minute walk from Green Square station, or a 20 minute walk from St Peters station. With its elegant fountains, surplus of photo opportunities and just all-round stylised prettiness, you’re ensured to have an enjoyable day here.
